Addiction Community Support Worker Diploma

The Addiction Community Support Worker Diploma prepares students to provide professional support to individuals, families, groups, and communities affected by addiction, mental health concerns, and related social challenges.

Students develop foundational knowledge in addiction, psychology, sociology, ethics, pharmacology, mental health, family studies, behaviour analysis, relapse prevention, and community-service work.

The program also develops practical skills in interviewing, intake procedures, professional report writing, resource navigation, community networking, self-care, and supporting children, youth, families, and high-risk populations.

Students complete 800 hours of instructor-led classroom training and 100 hours of co-op placement. The placement provides an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a professional community-service environment.

Graduates may pursue support roles with social-service organizations, community programs, residential facilities, shelters, family-service organizations, mental-health services, and other public or private community-support environments.

Applicants must satisfy the program’s academic or mature-student eligibility requirements and complete the required admission documentation.

Academic and Age Requirements

Applicants must provide or meet the applicable requirements below:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Grade 12 English with a minimum grade of C
  • Mature-student status for applicants who are 19 years of age or older, where applicable

Additional Admission Documentation

Applicants must also provide:

  • A criminal-record check
  • An immunization report
  • A completed Student Declaration form for the Addiction Community Support Worker program

English-Language Proficiency

Applicants must provide evidence of English-language proficiency through at least one of the following options.

Secondary Education in English

Applicants may provide evidence that they successfully completed three years of full-time secondary education between Grades 8 and 12 in English in a country where English is one of the principal languages.

Applicants using this option must provide transcripts showing completion of Grade 12 English with a minimum grade of C. This may include successful completion of an Adult Graduation Program.

Post-Secondary Education in English

Applicants may provide evidence that they completed two years of full-time post-secondary education at an accredited institution where English was the principal language of instruction.

Approved English-Language Test

Applicants may provide verified results from an accepted English-language proficiency test. Test results must be dated no more than two years before the program start date.

Accepted minimum scores include:

  • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 5.5 or higher
  • CAEL: Overall score of 40 or higher
  • Duolingo English Test: Overall score of 95 or higher
  • TOEFL iBT: Overall score of 46 or higher
  • CELPIP: Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 5, and Writing 5
  • PTE Academic: Overall score of 43 or higher

Assessment Methods

Students may be assessed through quizzes, examinations, written assignments, projects, practical activities, and other course-based assessments.

A final grade of 60% is required to pass each course unless a different passing requirement is stated in the official course outline.

Attendance Requirement

Students must maintain a minimum attendance level of 85%.

Co-Op Placement Eligibility

Students must maintain a minimum C grade average and meet the applicable attendance and program requirements before beginning the 100-hour co-op placement.

Graduation Requirement

Students must achieve a minimum C grade average and successfully complete all required courses, assessments, certificate requirements, and the co-op placement.
